IE 7 preview
Just a small little preview of the new Internet Explorer 7. Umm... it's not that great. It's an improvement, but it seems to get a number of things wrong as well. Oddly, it gets things wrong that were find under IE6.
- Writing up this blog post was a little awkward. Whenever I deleted text in the textbox, the little blinking line would pass over the text, not actually deleting any of it until I started typing again. I'm not entirely sure if this is a compatibility error with Blogger, a bug in IE7 or some sort of ill-designed 'feature' that somebody thought would be good to have.
- Tabbed browsing is not particularly well implemented. On either side of the tabs toolbar (the toolbar which has all the tabs in it) there are other toolbars. In a really odd move, the standard drop-down menu toolbar (like File, Edit and Help) have been moved below the URL bar. This does not make any sense, as it completely ruins any sort of consistency with all the other Windows apps in XP and is just plain stupid. I don't see any reason how putting those toolbars beside the tab bar is an improvement in any way. This also leave very little room for the tabs, which quickly become cluttered in the toolbar.
- Beacause of the tab bar, there's alot of blank space which just gives the entire UI an extremely barren and dull look when coupled with the classic theme in XP.
- There's no quick access to your bookmarks (called Favorites by IE) unless you open the Favorites bar which cuts in on your screen real-estate.
- There's a nice little tab preview which shows all of your open tabs as little previews (kind of similar to Apple's Expose feature in OS X).
- IE7 does a much better job than Firefox at getting the little icons for different websites.
- I generally find that websites load slower in IE7 compared to Firefox.
All in all, I don't think the new IE7 is all that great at all. Hopefully, Microsoft will fix some of these problems. However, some things seem here to stay, like the badly placed toolbars and annoying way of dealing with bookmarks.

Here's where I'm confused:
Firefox got the website icon for planethalflife.com.
In your screenshot, IE7 did not.
Explain, then, your previous claim?
What I meant is that Firefox is inconsistent with the icons for websites. Internet Explorer 7 seemed to get the icon for every website that had one, whereas Firefox was inconsistent with the icons it received.
Ah. Could you give an example website that Firefox has trouble with (I am not familiar with this problem).
Holy crap. Well, it's doing it now, except only partially. The icons are showing up on in the tabs, but some of them are not showing up for their respective bookmarks. Gmail is one of them.
